On Monday, director Peter Sellars visited Schloss Arenberg to chat with the campers about directing, singing, and the opera One Morning Turns Into an Eternity, which he is staging at the Salzburg Festival this year.

Five days later, Mila and her fellow campers will present their own version of the same opera to the public. From stage design to costumes, from direction to music — everything is developed by the 15- to 17-year-old girls and boys. There is singing, playing, painting, crafting, rehearsing, and dancing — and it’s a joy to witness. Teaching artists provide the children with a basic concept, imagining a shortened version of the original opera that is both singable and performable. But there is still plenty of room for the creative ideas of the young participants.

There are three camps in 2025: Erwartung/AbschiedMaria Stuarda, and Macbeth. Our fellow is participating in just one. Although we are not affiliated with the project organizers in any way, we always encourage young people to apply. The most important requirement for earning one of the coveted spots: a passion for music. We are happy to support candidates during the application process. Once accepted, they are welcome to apply for our fellowship.
